On Tuesday Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had strong words for Republicans. Schumer stated if Republicans make any attempt to pass the money for the border wall or make any attempts to defund Planned Parenthood; he will shut down the government. The comments came after Schumer had written a letter to the head Republican in the Senate Mitch McConnel and then spoke with reporters.
“If they put these poison pill amendments in and try to shove them down the American people’s throat,” Schumer told reporters, “of course they might be responsible for shutting the government down.”
According to Schumer Republicans agreed that they would not add any controversial policies to the government funding measures until a budget can be agreed on and passed. The debate that will go on next month for funding will include money to build the immigration wall.
The Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell responded to Schumer letter saying:
“When it comes to” the government funding debate and acknowledging that the minority will have the opportunity to ball up [the funding bill] like they did last year. I’m amused by the Democrats apparently warming up to the idea that threatening to shut down the government is a good idea.”
Normally Republicans would cave to any government shutdown and except for a very short period under the Obama Administration Republicans have wavered to let it happen. The last time the Democrats shut down the government it halted Newt Gingrich and caused Republicans to lose seats in the latter election. That is a result I’m sure the Democrats would love. Moving forward it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Would you support a shutdown? Do you support Schumer if he shuts down the government?
