Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been under fire for the past several days after not mentioning his meeting with Russia’s ambassador last year. Sessions will now need to submit an amended testimony and respond to questions by senators over the meetings.
The Senate Judiciary Committee decided to ask the committee chairman to request Sessions come back in for a follow-up hearing. All nine Democratic senators in the Committee were in agreement to question him on his recent decision to recuse himself from the investigation of the Trump campaign and Russia’s involvement.
Peter Carr, Justice Department spokesman, issued a statement on the request saying:
“In light of the letter received from Senators late this afternoon, the Attorney General will respond to their questions along with his amended testimony on Monday.”
On Friday, Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley rejected the request saying there were no plans to call Sessions back. However, Democrats held their ground saying he needed to be questioned in public and said, “we do not believe that a written submission to correct the record is sufficient.”
While many people are saying Sessions misled the Committee in his January hearing, many are saying he simply forgot. A simple miscommunication happens daily in every branch and committee of government, so why take such a harsh stance now?
