Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that any state or local government requesting grants from the Justice Department would need to certify they are not sanctuary cities. Sessions made the following announcement during a surprise press briefing on Monday:
“Such policies cannot continue. They make our nation less safe by putting dangerous criminals back on the streets. Today, I am urging states and local jurisdictions to comply with these federal laws.”
The Trump administration has been trying to destroy sanctuary since the very beginning. This is their most recent attempt to quench more of these cities. These cities not only harbor illegal immigrants but they resist federal authorities in the enforcement of immigration laws.
According to The Hill, Sessions noted that billions of dollars have previously gone through these cities:
“Sessions said that compliance with federal immigration laws will be a prerequisite for states and localities that want to receive grants from the department’s Office of Justice Programs. The office provides billions of dollars in grants and other funding to help criminal justice programs across the country.”
A recent grant totaling almost $8.5 million was recently announced by the Office for Victims of Crime. The grant would go towards victims of the Orlando gay nightclub shooting last year. Grants like these will never be seen if states remain a sanctuary for illegal immigration. Sessions also called out Maryland saying that any forward progress to becoming a sanctuary state “would be such a mistake.”
Sessions went on talking about Maryland saying:
“I would plead with the people of Maryland to understand this makes the state of Maryland more at risk for violence and crime, that it’s not good policy.”
The shutting down of Sanctuary cities was a top priority for Donald Trump during his campaign. He often used people who had loved ones killed by illegal immigration during his rallies. He even used this method during his first Joint Address.
