Cue the western themed soundtrack…There is a showdown between the Department of Justice and the Congress happening right now in Washington. The Department of Justice has declined a request from the Congressional House Oversight Committee to release the former FBI Director James Comey’s communications with President Donald Trump.
Citing the newly appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the FBI said on Thursday that the agency is “undertaking appropriate consultation to ensure all relevant interests implicated by your request are properly evaluated. We will update this response as soon as possible.”
The House Oversight Committee chairman, Jason Chaffetz, responded to the FBI on Thursday saying that his committee has a “Constitutionally-based prerogative to conduct investigations.” He made it clear that his committee does not want to interfere with the Special Counsel’s probe, but instead “will complement the work of the Special Counsel” and shed light on matters of “high public interest.”
In his response, Chaffetz reissued his request for materials related to Comey and communications with the White House and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He gave a deadline of June 8th…that western soundtrack just started playing again.
