Trump’s posture after the Comey hearings is anything but defensive. The president is on an offensive march claiming the former FBI director lied under oath during his sworn testimony before a Congressional committee. “No collusion. No obstruction. He’s a leaker,” Trump said during a White House news conference when asked about the substance of Comey’s testimony.
When the president was asked about the accusations that he asked Comey to “let go” of the FBI’s Michael Flynn investigation and about lifting the “cloud” of the Russia investigation, Trump said emphatically, “I didn’t say that,” and then added, “there’d be nothing wrong if I did say it.” Trump also took aim at the Democratic leadership saying, “It was an excuse by the Democrats who lost an election.”
The president obviously is not ready to disclose whether or not there are tape recordings of his interactions with Comey. When asked about the recordings, Trump told reporters, “I’ll tell you sometime maybe in the very near future.” Reporters kept pressing the president throughout the news conference about taped recordings, and if and when the White House would release such recordings. At one point Trump responded: “I’m not hinting about anything, I’ll tell you in a very short period of time.”
Maybe the most important thing that Trump said to the reporters was that many of Comey’s claims “just weren’t true.” One reporter asked the president if Comey was a liar. Trump said, “I didn’t say that.” When a reporter asked if Trump would give a testimony about the exchanges with Comey under oath, he replied “One Hundred percent.” The president charged that Comey was not telling the truth about being asked to pledge his loyalty. “I hardly know the man. I’m not going to say, ‘I want you to pledge allegiance,'” he continued. “Who would do that? Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath?”
Some of those who surround the president probably would have wanted him to dial down any future confrontation with Comey, but that is not Trump’s style. It looks like he is going after him for lying under oath, even if it means testifying under oath himself. This is far from over. What do you think about Trump’s aggressive stance?
