It seems like President Trump just made Bernie Sander’s (I-Vt.) day! Sanders gave a laugh-out-loud response to President Trump’s compliment of Australia’s universal healthcare system on Thursday. Sanders promised that the Democrats will remind the president of his comments from the Senate floor in the process of getting the Republican healthcare bill passed. Sanders had his laugh during an interview on MSNBC right after Trump remarked to the Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, that Australia has “better healthcare than we do.”
Thank you Mr. Trump for admitting that universal health care is the better way to go. I’ll be sure to quote you on the floor of the Senate. pic.twitter.com/GTFRHiKw6k

Sanders pounced, “That’s great. Let’s take a look at the Australian healthcare system. Maybe he wants to take a look at the Canadian healthcare system or systems throughout Europe,” Sanders, an advocate of a single-payer system, told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. The Independent Senator from Vermont continued, “Thank you, Mr. President. Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country on earth does – guarantee healthcare to all people at a fraction of the cost per-capita that we spend. Thank you, Mr. President. We’ll quote you on the floor of the Senate.”
The model for healthcare in Australia has both private and public markets. The private sector works alongside a publicly funded universal healthcare system; the kind the Sanders has been proposing for years. This “confession” is sure to make the debate from the Democrats as the Republicans go against the odds in getting consensus within their own party. President Trump admitted on Thursday that the GOP’s healthcare bill “could change a little bit,” but also voiced confidence that the legislation will ultimately reach his desk for a signature.
If Trump and his team can rally consensus among the Republican Senate like they did with the House, Sanders might not be laughing anymore.
What do you think about Trump’s statement to Turnbull and Sander’s laugh-out-loud response? We would like to see your comments.
