President Trump promised to “bomb the (expletive) out of ISIS” several times in the last few years. He has already fulfilled part of that promise, but now he’s giving the Central Intelligence Agency a little more power to help really hit it home.
The POTUS recently gave new authority to the CIA allowing them to conduct drone attacks against suspected militants. This order will change a previous rule that the Obama administration placed which limited the paramilitary role.
In general, the U.S. is more advanced with drones than any other country. This is partly due to the United States being first to use unmanned aircraft in war. The first use of these unmanned vehicles was shortly after the deadly attacks on September 11th, 2001.
Drone usage in the war continued through the Bush administration and into the Obama administration and will now sit under President Trump’s influence. Many people criticize the use of drones saying they create more militants than they actually kill. According to Reuters, those people use the ‘spread of jihadist organizations and militant attacks’ around the world as a reason that targeted killing is making it worse.
While the logic doesn’t always tie together, the U.S. did admit to killing 116 civilians in an airstrike where America was not at war. This does present issues that should be addressed. What is your opinion on the use of drones? Do you think the CIA should have full reign to use them at their discretion? Let us know below!
