Trump Isn’t the Only Target In Comey’s Book

The first glimpses at former FBI Director James Comey’s book were published on Thursday. They include a mysterious reference to classified information, which is unknown to the public but casts doubt on the independence of former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

At the beginning of 2016, the U.S. government became aware of information from a classified source, and “the source and content of that material remain classified as I write this,” according to Comey’s book.

The former FBI director continued writing:

“Had it become public, the unverified material would undoubtedly have been used by political opponents to cast serious doubt on the attorney general’s independence in connection with the Clinton investigation,” Comey writes, without any further clarification.

Comey declares that he didn’t believe Lynch interfered with the investigation, even after she had a highly controversial meeting on a Phoenix tarmac with former President Bill Clinton. But that encounter convinced Comey that he needed to move forward with his own public accounting of the email server investigation.

While doing a pre-book release interview with NBC this week, Lynch said she and Comey had a “full and open discussion” about the handling of the Clinton email case in the fall of 2015, and that “concerns were not raised.”

NBC News also reports that Comey for the first time reveals that the U.S. government had unverified classified information that he believed could have been used to create doubt about Attorney General Lynch’s independence in the Clinton investigation.

Comey doesn’t say that he saw indications of Lynch inappropriately influencing the investigation, he says it worried him that the material could be used to attack the integrity of the probe and the FBI.

But Comey’s comments about Lynch not influencing the probe doesn’t jive with his previous statement about Lynch asking him to testify that the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server was to be referred to as “a matter.”

Do you think Comey’s veiled comments are a signal that there’s a whole lot more to this story and Lynch’s tie to the Clintons?
