President Trump is working hard to defend his children in the midst of controversy. He went after critics who were offended that Ivanka held his seat at the G20 Summit while he was away, and now he is praising his son, Don Trump Jr., who is feeling the heat for a meeting with a Russian Lawyer. The lawyer claimed to have compromising information about Trump’s rival, Hillary Clinton.
The president said in a brief statement which Sarah Huckabee Sanders read to reporters during an off-camera briefing, “My son is a high-quality person and I applaud his transparency.”
This was the first response from President Trump since the meeting that happened in the throes of the campaign was made public on Saturday. The disclosure of the meeting has shaken the White House which has been struggling to contain the criticism from a wide-ranging investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Huckabee Sanders acknowledged that “the president is, I would say, frustrated with the process of the fact that this continues to be an issue. He would love for us to be focused on things like … the economy, on health care, on tax reform, on infrastructure and that’s the place that his mind is, and that’s what he’d like to be discussing,” Sanders said. The deputy press secretary did not dispute new emails that have been disclosed by Don Trump Jr. that give detail to the efforts to set up the meeting. Sanders received multiple questions about the remarkable disclosure by the president’s son during the 21-minute briefing; she repeatedly referred reporters to attorneys representing the president and his eldest son. The lawyers have not responded to the requests for comments.
Sanders referred to some of what has been said about Trump’s meeting with the Russian lawyer is “ridiculous.” She questions the use of words like “treason” or perjury” to describe Trump’s behavior. And she has stood by Don Jr.’s claim that he did not collude with Russian efforts to interfere with the election.
Sanders also denied that the vice president is trying to distance himself from Donald Trump Jr.’s controversy. Pence put out a statement which said he is “not focused on stories about the campaign… especially those about the time he joined the ticket.” Sanders said, ”There is absolutely no distance between the president and the vice president.”
There’s no doubt that President Trump stands with his children. Do you think he is going too far?
