Trump Presses German Chancellor On Paying Their Fair Share

President Trump had his first face-to-face meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday. The meeting gave Trump and chance to pressure the Chancellor about the NATO military spending target.

It was hopeful that the meeting would strengthen the relationship between Chancellor and President as well as direct the future of the Transatlantic alliance. Trump issued a statement at a joint news conference saying:

“I reiterated to Chancellor Merkel my strong support for NATO as well as the need for our NATO allies to pay their fair share for the cost of defense.”

Trump also said that the United States was expected to perform extremely well in a trade with Germany. Merkel, on the other hand, hoped that the U.S. and the E.U. could renegotiate a trade agreement. “Trump said he did not believe in isolationism but the trade policy should be fairer,” wrote Yahoo news. Merkel recounted the meeting saying:

“We held a conversation where we were trying to address also those areas where we disagree, but we tried to bring people together … (and) tried to find a compromise that is good for both sides.”

During Trump’s campaign, he disagreed with Merkel’s choice to allow thousands of refugees into Germany. This dispute did come up in the meeting when Merkel hinted, “This is obviously something we had an exchange of views about.”

Merkel, who had close relationships with former presidents Bush and Obama, will likely grow close with President Trump. Merkel leads Europe’s largest economy and Trump has a passion and love for business making the two fit to be friends…if they can get past their differences. According to a conservative lawmaker, Juergen Hardt, Merkel has a unique ability to win people over:

“Those who know the chancellor know that she has a knack for winning over people in personal discussions. I am sure that Donald Trump will not be immune.”
