President Trump and most reporters seem to have a less than cordial relationship. Much of the animosity comes from how much Trump has limited himself from them. The most recent case of this is from this past week when White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer barred certain news outlets from joining a press conference.
While ditching his White House press is frowned upon by journalists, Mr. Trump isn’t the first president to do so. Often times, President Trump will disappear to dine or play golf in private. Last night was one of those times and the pool reporters had no clue where the President was going.
According to the pool report from last night:
Pool was escorted onto the South Lawn driveway at 7:32 PM, where we boarded vans in the presidential motorcade. Motorcade rolled out from the WH grounds at 8:14 PM. Destination unknown. POTUS has no public events on his schedule today.
When the POTUS arrived at the restaurant he was attending, the reporter assigned to him, Jordan Fabian, was not allowed inside. However, Independent Journal Review Journalist Benny Johnson managed to get news ahead of time and position himself one table away from the POTUS.
Curious of how Trump acted when no press were around, Johnson recorded the events with immense detail and precision and presented photos.
According to Johnson’s report, Secret Service members started into the area with dogs. They then meticulously checked every detail of the table prior to Trump’s dinner. When the President finally entered, the crowd immediately surrounded him and his secret service presence. Trump took some time shaking hands and taking selfies with his fans until he noticed his guest, Nigel Farage.
President Trump gestured Farage to dinner and slowly made his way upstairs, all the while stopping to meet people. Along the way, Trump was stopped by a fan who screamed, “Donald, it’s my birthday!” The President stopped, gave her a hug, then wished her a happy birthday. “How about a birthday present,” Trump continued. “Let’s take a photo.”
The President moved on to his dining table with the following guests: Nigel Farage, Governor Rick Scott, Trump’s daughter Ivanka, and her husband, Jared Kushner.
After a few appetizers were brought out, President Trump learned that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his wife were there on a date. The President broke from his table briefly to chat with the couple. From the laughter and smiles, it seemed like the conversation was a hearty one. After leaving the Tillerson couple, President Trump made his way back to his dinner party.
Thanks to Johnson’s keen reporting, a waiter revealed what the President ate and how he acted without media present:
“The President ordered a well-done steak. An aged New York strip. He ate it with catsup as he always does. The sides and appetizers on the table were shared. Three jumbo shrimp cocktails were delivered before the meal. At one point, the President looked at his watch and remarked, ‘They are filming ‘Saturday Night Live’ right now. Can’t wait to see what they are gonna do to me this week.’ It was hard to serve him because he is so funny and relaxed, it makes you laugh.”
The dinner last over two hours, all of which seemed ‘normal’ to those around him. During the meal, the Tillersons came over to say hello to everyone before leaving the restaurant. According to Johnson, the restaurant staff said Trump picked up their bill for dinner.
As the end of the night came, Johnson reported:
“Trump and his party get up to leave. The president is stopped momentarily for selfies and handshakes. discreetly, Trump can be seen handing cash to one of the latino busboys for his table. The president handed the young man a $100 bill.”
As Trump left the building, he continued to engage his fans and even joined in a “USA” chant while “pumping his fist.” After he left, Johnson managed to find Farage and ask him about the dinner. His response was not what most would have expected:
“Well it’s really quite wonderful. But as I’ve gotten to know Donald, it really just does not surprise me. You know what amazes me about your President? He is a regular bloke. Truly. Just a normal chap. Upstairs at dinner, he spoke to the table like any regular guy out to dine with friends and family. There is no pretension at all.”
There’s always a second side to a President, could this be what the real Donald Trump is like?
