Now that the dust is settling from campaign season, speculation is running rampant about the possible cabinet appointments expected by President-elect Trump. One of the most important ones that Democrats may be nervous about is that of Attorney General. If Trump holds true to a Tweet from July, then they have reason to be nervous.
As speculation has risen, several names have emerged for Attorney General including Rudy Giuliani, Chris Christie, Ken Feinberg and Trey Gowdy. Gowdy is a veteran on this list. In July, Trump tweeted, “Dems had better get the “B team” off the bench. @TGowdySC for Attorney General under President Trump”
Congressman Gowdy (R-S.C.) has long been a harsh critic of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign season. Fox News reported that as chair of the House Benghazi committee, Gowdy “was grilling James Comey in one of those hearings on him not bringing charges against Hillary Clinton.” If Gowdy were to become Attorney General, questions would most certainly arise over his intentions to drop or reopen any investigation of Clinton.
Speculation has also arisen in recent days regarding the potential for President Obama to pardon Clinton before he leaves office. Such a move would likely prevent any future prosecution of Clinton herself. It remains to be seen if the president will actually make that move and what, if any, effect that would have into additional investigations into the Clinton Foundation.
