President Donald Trump released good wishes for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He said that he wishes the justice good health and that he hope’s she is happy and lives for a long time. But then the president talked about the person he would chose to replace Ginsburg.
Trump said it is likely the person he nominates to fill the next vacant seat on the court would come from his previously released list.
“I hope that she’s healthy … I hope she’s happy … I hope she lives for a long time,” Trump said of Ginsburg. She has not been seen in public for over a month and is recovering from lung surgery and a battle with cancer.
The president did not commit to speculations that he will nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett if there is a need to fill Ginsburg’s seat. But he did say of his previously released list of potential Supreme Court nominees, “I have very much confined myself to that list as you know … that list has great people on it … and I’d say it’s highly likely I would say.”
When Trump was a candidate for the presidency, he released a list of potential Supreme Court nominees in May 2016. He has since expanded the list to include five additional judges in November 2017.
“Anybody on that list would be a choice … they’re great people,” Trump continued.
The president speculated that his released list of potential Supreme Court nominees was one of the reasons he won the election. He said, “a lot of people have said that list is one of the reasons I won … because being a non-politician where you don’t have a record of choosing people … Supreme Court especially for the Republican party, it seems was very, very important.”
What do you think about the president’s comments about Justice Ginsburg? Do you think he was too quick to talk about a replacement for her?
