‘Unprovoked Attack’ Threatens Lives Of Police Officers Everywhere

A New York City police officer was killed Wednesday after being shot in the head while she was sitting in her vehicle. Authorities are calling it an “unprovoked attack.” Officer Miosotis Familia was a 48-year-old mother of three and was shot by Alexander Bonds. He approached her vehicle and shot the officer right through the window without warning, according to the New York Post.
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said that Familia was “assassinated in an unprovoked attack on cops assigned to keep [New Yorkers] safe.” The shooter was on parole for a robbery and he had been convicted for beating up a police officer in 2001 with brass knuckles. Bonds was chased down after fleeing the scene by two other officers and was shot dead. Familia was rushed to the hospital where she later was pronounced dead.
Jay Marzelli witnessed the crime and said he heard gunshots and then saw the officer lying on the ground. “I saw an officer laying there on the ground unconscious in another officer’s arms. Police officers screaming, ‘Get the f*cking paramedics.’” He continued, “It was crazy — just insane. There were police officers everywhere.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio paid tribute to Familia at a news conference, “She was on duty, serving this city, protecting people, doing what she believed in and doing the job she loved,” he said. This shooting was just like the one in 2014 when two police officers in the Bronx, Wenjian Liu, and Rafael Ramos, were shot dead in their marked car by Ismaaiyl Brinsley.
Senate Minority Leader, Charles Schumer (D-NY), also offered his condolences on Wednesday to the family of the slain NYPD officer. “Woke to the terrible news that Officer Miosotis Familia was shot & killed in the Bronx overnight. God bless her family & the NYPD,” Schumer wrote on Twitter.
This tragic “unprovoked attack” is the most recent example of the heroic bravery that our men and women in blue show daily as they continue to work for the safety of our cities. We offer our prayers to the family of Miosotis Familia.
