Friday we reported that the Washington Post are claiming that Jared Kushner was a focus in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump team. Now we may know why the president’s son-in-law is under such renewed scrutiny. Kushner discussed the possibility of Trump’s transition team secretly communicating with the Kremlin, according to the Washington Post. Kushner apparently spoke with Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak in early December of last year concerning setting up a “secure communications channel using Russian diplomatic facilities” in the United States, according to the Post report.
“I really don’t know of an instance in history where an incoming administration is trying to set up a private channel of communication with Moscow,” Washington Post reporter Greg Miller said. Miller reported that even Russian leaders were concerned about the security risks of such an agreement. Of course in fairness, Miller may have forgotten about this after all it was eight years ago. Back, in 2014 some in the media uncovered that in 2008 the incoming Obama Administration set up a back channel with Iran.
The Senate Intelligence Committee is seeking documents from ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, but he has invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Now the committee is going at it from a difference angle, subpoenaing Flynn’s business for information.
In a May 18 press conference, President Trump denied that there was any collusion between himself or his campaign with Russia. “There is no collusion between, certainly myself and my campaign, but I can only speak for myself and the Russians. Zero,” Trump said. “Believe me, there’s no collusion,” he continued. “Russia is fine, but whether it’s Russia or anybody else, my total priority, believe me, is the United States of America.” Trump also referred to the Russian probe into his administration as “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!” The White House has not commented on this recent report about Kushner from the Washington Post.
