Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House Press Secretary, declared clearly that the Justice Department “should certainly look at” prosecuting former FBI Director James Comey. The White House has accused him of leaking information and providing false testimony under oath.
When Sanders was asked if President Donald Trump would encourage the Justice Department to prosecute Comey, she replied, “That’s not the president’s role. That’s the job of the Department of Justice, and something they should certainly look at.”
A reporter then asked Sanders, “Is that something you’d like to see?”
Sanders replied: “I’m not sure about that specifically, but I think if there’s ever a moment where we feel someone’s broken the law, particularly if they’re the head of the FBI, I think that’s something that certainly should be looked at.”
President Trump fired James Comey in May because of the ongoing investigation into his campaign’s relationship with Russia. Comey was leading that investigation as the head of the FBI. Later, in a testimony on Capitol Hill, Comey gave details about his relationship with Trump. He included interactions in which he said the president asked him to stop the investigation into Michael Flynn, who was then Trump’s National Security Adviser. Trump has denied putting any pressure on Comey. Comey also said that he took many notes on his conversations with Trump.
The White House has alleged that it was illegal for Comey to ask a friend to give information from those memos to a reporter. Comey acknowledged doing that in his congressional testimony. The president tweeted in July that Comey had leaked classified information through Daniel Richman, his friend who gave the material to a reporter. Richman maintains that the information was not classified.
