Move over Pelosi and Schumer, there’s a new voice for the Democratic Party, and it’s a loud and somewhat crude one. Tom Perez is the newly elected Democratic National Committee Chairman. Before his present service, he was the United States Secretary of Labor in Obama’s cabinet from 2013 to 2017. He has served as politician, consumer advocate, and civil rights attorney.
He recently campaigned for Democrats in Newark, New Jersey and emotionally shouted to the crowd that the Republican Party doesn’t “give a sh*t” about them. The highly charged rally was hosted by the New Jersey Working Families Alliance. Perez first congratulated the many protesters who showed up by the droves in Washington, DC on January 21st, the day after President Trump was inaugurated. Perez said that the day of the protest was the day that “the resistance took over.” He summed up what he believed the message of the protest was: “Donald Trump, you don’t stand for our values… Donald Trump you didn’t win the election.”
In the rest of his speech to the emotional crowd, Perez pounced on the failed Republican health care bill, expressed opposition to Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, called Trump a “bully” and made fun of his trips to Mar-a-lago. It was later in the speech that Perez said that he didn’t “care” if people took issue with his speech, just like how “Republicans don’t give a sh*t about people.” As the crowd responded with cheers, he shouted, “This repeal was a massive tax break for the wealthy.”
In the fury of that moment, the ballroom lights went out. Perez seized the moment and said, “And you know what? You can try and silence our lights, but we will bring your abuses to light.”
You can watch a portion of the speech in the video below. Let us know in your comments what you think about this speech and the new chair of the Democratic Party. Do you think he is right about Trump not standing for our values? What about not winning the election?
