She apparently was not prepared for the shout down that the “Dreamers” dished out. Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi was shouted out of a news conference she was delivering to defend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program on Monday. The heated group of protesters blamed Democrats for being in collusion with President Trump on ending the Obama-era program.
Pelosi stood behind a podium that had been covered with a sign that said “#protectdreamers.” But those who came to the news conference were ready to make their frustration known. They began shouting in unison,
“We, the undocumented youth, will not be a marketing chip for Trump,” they recited. “Democrats created an out-of-control deportation machine and handed it over to Trump. We demand accountability.”
Pelosi was flanked by her staff, but the protesters began closing in on them as they shouted, “Undocumented, unafraid.” After trying to break through to them, Pelosi’s staff members ushered the Washington politician up the stairs and out of the building. Those angry shouted, “You’re a liar.”
This tension has been rising since President Trump announced the end of DACA last week, the program enacted by former President Barack Obama in an executive order in 2012. The program protects undocumented immigrants brought to the US illegally as children by their parents from deportation. DACA allows the Dreamers to receive two-year permits that enable them to work or go to school.
Trump ordered the program to end but gave Congress six months to work out a deal to compensate. Pelosi and fellow Democratic colleague Chuck Schumer met with Trump last week over a White House dinner and then announced that they had reached a deal with the president on DACA.
