It’s not in a galaxy far, far away, it’s right here on MSNBC; although some have said MSNBC is a galaxy far way. The “Morning Joe” host, Joe Scarborough, did his best Yoda impression to argue that Trump is “so jealous of Barack Obama” that he has allowed himself to be unwittingly controlled. The reason Donald Trump believes that Russia meddled in the 2016 election is because of his predecessor Barack Obama.
On Monday’s early morning show, Scarborough joked that Obama must have gone on vacation to the island where Luke Skywalker ended up in “The Force Awakens,” because the former president has been pulling “extraordinary Jedi mind tricks” on Trump. Scarborough said, “Everybody’s been trying to get him to admit, every reporter in Washington, that the Russians meddled with our elections,” Scarborough said of President Trump. “And Barack Obama comes back and goes, ‘The Russians meddled with our elections,’” he noted, making the Jedi mind trick-gesture.
On Friday, the Washington Post reported that the Obama administration knew that the Kremlin was trying to influence the election and contemplated a forceful response, but eventually decided not to do it. One White House official said, “I feel like we sort of choked.”
The night that Obama declared that the Russians in fact meddled, Trump was finally acknowledging “election meddling by Russia” for the first time on Twitter. “How many people have tried to get Donald Trump to admit that the Russians meddled with the 2016 election?” Scarborough asked. “All Barack Obama has to do is just come back on the scene in his Jedi garb.”
In another “Star Wars” like story, Obama called the Republican health care bill “mean,” and just a few days later, Trump admitted that he had called it “mean” on Fox News. This caused Scarborough to say in his best Yoda impression, “Obama! Strong the force is with his family.” The show then cut to a clip of Obama in action before it played the Obi-Wan Kenobi “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for” scene from A New Hope.
Scarborough maintained it was jealousy of Barack Obama that caused Trump to admit that the healthcare bill was mean. He said,“And he goes, ‘That’s my word! I’m the one who said it was ‘mean.’ I’m the one that said it was going to throw seniors out of the street! I’m the one who said that young children with pre-existing conditions were going to die!’”
This is not the first time Obama has been compared to a Jedi master. At a news conference in 2013, Obama himself said regarding his conflict with Republicans, “I’m presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don’t take it means that I should somehow, you know, do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right.” This created some controversy on the internet because Obama confused the Star Wars “Jedi mind trick” with Star Trek’s “Vulcan mind meld.”
What do you think about MSNBC’s host, Scarborough, making such an analogy? Do you think Obama really does have some control over Trump?
