President Trump used his campaign style rhetoric at a rally in West Virginia Thursday night and mocked the Russian investigation by asking “Have you seen any Russian’s in West Virginia? Are there any Russians here tonight?”
Trump is launching a fresh defense following news that the special counsel is investigating ties between his campaign associates and Moscow by impaneling a grand jury in Washington.
“Most people know there were no Russians in our campaign, there never were,” Trump said during the rally in Huntington, W.Va. “We didn’t win because of Russia, we won because of you,” he added.
Then Trump began joking about Russians being found in key battleground states that included West Virginia. “Have you seen any Russian in West Virginia, or Ohio or Pennsylvania?” Trump asked. “Are there any Russians here tonight?”
Trump fell back on his well-worn indictment saying that his political opponents are pushing a “fake story.” He said that it is “demeaning to all of us and most importantly demeaning to our country and demeaning to our Constitution. They can’t beat us at the voting booths, so they’re trying to cheat you out of the future and the future that you want,” he said.
The grand jury imposed by Mueller will not only look at ties between the Trump campaign and Moscow, but subpoenas have also been issued relating to a June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort and a Russian Lawyer. She promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House press secretary, said regarding the grand jury news, “Former FBI Director Jim Comey said three times the president is not under investigation and we have no reason to believe that has changed.”
