Ben Jacobs Didn’t Give Fellow Journalist A Fair Shake When They Claimed They Were Assaulted

We just published a story about a GOP House candidate named Greg Gianforte being cited for misdemeanor assault on a reporter named Ben Jacobs. Apparently, Gianforte body slammed Jacobs and broke his glasses after the reporter kept pressing him about the Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act. Now, it was totally uncalled that Ben Jacobs was attacked. However, Ben Jacobs did not show the same compassion to a member of the press core when they claimed another reporter assaulted them.

Back in March, a White House correspondent for a right-wing blog accused a Fox News Radio reporter of assaulting him at Friday’s press briefing in the White House. A Fox News representative and the Fox News reporter have flatly denied the allegation. Lucian Wintrich, a writer for the blog Gateway Pundit, said on Twitter that Jon Decker, a White House correspondent for Fox News Radio, grabbed his arm “while shouting” he’s “a Nazi.”

“He came out of nowhere and cornered me in the back room, not letting me pass,” Wintrich said. “He’s a truly sick guy. Fox needs to address behavior like this in their staff.” Wintrich tweeted several photos which make it seem like Decker is in close proximity to Wintrich.

Now the same reporter Ben Jacobs who was assaulted by Gianforte back in March tweeted a picture of Wintrich speaking to the press about the alleged assault and made fun of him.

Jon Decker said in a statement given to Business Insider that he had a “conversation with a representative from the online publication Gateway Pundit” but at no time did he get physical with the writer. “The conversation was straightforward and direct,” Decker said. “I also informed the full White House pool that this representative was present in the Briefing Room. At no time did I accost or assault this individual. More than a dozen witnesses will attest to this fact.”

A Fox News representative also denied that an assault happened in a statement to Business Insider and said that Decker was upset with some of Wintrich’s previous tweets and wanted to notify other members of the press corps that he was attending the daily briefing. Wintrich took issue with Decker’s account of the incident, “Every sentence of his release is easily disputed by a dozen journalists,” Wintrich said, mocking Decker’s statement. A White House correspondent for BuzzFeed News, Adrian Carrasquillo, said on Twitter that Decker “loudly told everyone in [the] briefing room” that Wintrich writes for a blog that hates “blacks, Jews, Hispanics.”

Jim Hoft, the editor, and publisher of Gateway Pundit backed his employee. “I think we are going to try to press charges or at least report the incident,” Hoft said in a phone call. “What he did was totally uncalled for.” Gateway Pundit is a far-right blog that had become notorious for disseminating information with inflammatory headlines. They were only granted White House credentials recently. In fact, just on Thursday, Gateway Pundit drew intense criticism for suggesting that former President Obama was not born in the US but Kenya. This is not only “old” news, but a now-debunked conspiracy theory to which even President Trump has said he no longer subscribes.

The Gateway Pundit is definitely a shock blog, and many people disagree with their positions. But, if someone claims they were assaulted regardless of position or party they deserve a fair shake.

Also be careful what you post on social media because it never goes away, just ask the President.
Hey Ben, I’m sorry what happened to you because it should never have never happened, the actions taken against you was appalling. However, please remember to treat others the way you want to be treated because you never know, you may get treated the way you treated others.
