Although it happened over three years ago, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss to Donald Trump is still fresh in the former first lady’s mind.
The twice-failed Democratic candidate appeared on Howard Stern’s SirisXM radio show to cover a broad range of topics. The immediate aftermath of the presidential election was of particular interest to the legendary radio host, who wanted to know what was going through Clinton’s head right after Trump’s historic victory.
Clinton described attending Trump’s inauguration as “one of the hardest days of my life, to be honest,” though she says did it anyway because she was going “as a former first lady” who ran for president because she “loves this country.”
Stern then observed that the experience must have been particularly difficult for Mrs. Clinton, especially with the knowledge that she won the popular vote by roughly three million votes. “What the hell is going through your head?” Stern asked of Clinton when she was watching then President-elect Trump assume the oath of office. He continued somewhat jokingly: “I would imagine you were on anti-depressants that day.”
“Here’s how I felt about it,” Hillary answered. “Obviously, I was crushed. I was disappointed, and I was really surprised because I couldn’t figure out what had happened.”
Clinton then went on to confirm that she had not even prepared a concession speech for the night of the 2016 presidential election.
Stern’s interview also garnered a lot of attention for showing a more humorous, human side of Hillary Clinton, a side the public rarely gets to see. While coughing during the radio interview, Clinton poked fun at her own health, saying “I thought I’d come on and cough some more.” Concerns about Clinton’s health were of course campaign fodder that Trump and his team sought to capitalize on.
Continuing in the humorous spirit, and the nature of Stern’s show, Hillary joked: “Contrary to what you may hear, I actually like men.” True to form, this prompted the shock-jock to ask whether Clinton had ever engaged in “a lesbian affair,” which she denied
