Melania On Immigration: I Hate To See Families Separated

The First Lady doesn’t typically weigh in on her husband’s policy issues, but in a rare statement, Melania Trump said she “hates” to see families separated.

Speaking about the Trump administration’s zero tolerance policy on immigration that is splitting children from their parents, the first lady gave this statement:

“Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform,” Stephanie Grisham, the First Lady’s spokeswoman said.

“She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs from the heart.”

The First Lady has made helping children the center of her official “Be Best” platform. She previously had not made any statements about families and immigration, even though the topic had been in the headlines for days.

The federal policy being enforced charges every adult caught crossing the border illegally with federal crimes. They are no longer referring those with children to immigration courts, as was done in previous administrations.

Because these immigrants are being charged in the criminal justice system, children are separated from the adults. At this point, there is no reunification procedure. There are hotlines for parents to track down their children and talk to them.

The policy to charge all adults was publicly announced May 7, but the Justice Department announced it would prosecute 100% of the cases referred to it at the beginning of April.

Almost 2,000 children were separated from their parents and guardians and placed into holding facilities between April 19 and May 31 of this year. This is according to Department of Homeland Security spokesman Jonathan Hoffman.

There is fierce debate happing in the public because of this policy. Images and stories of children caught in the middle is leading to a public outcry.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly blamed the Democrats for the situation despite his administration instituting the policy change.

The president tweeted on Sunday: ”Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change!”
