In a rare public statement, First Lady Melania Trump was quick to come to the defense of her son, Barron, after remarks were made in reference to him during the House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearing.
Earlier in the day, Stanford law professor Pamela Karlan referenced Barron Trump while criticizing the president: “Contrary to what President Trump has said, Article 2 does not give him the power to do anything he wants. The Constitution says there can be no titles of nobility, so while the president can name his son Barron, he can’t make him a baron.”
Soon thereafter, Florida Republican Matt Gaetz and Trump campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany rebuked Karlan, the latter saying: “Only in the minds of crazed liberals is it funny to drag a 13-year-old child into the impeachment nonsense.” McEnany also mused about the supposed double standard which applies to Hunter Biden, observing that Joe Biden’s son “is supposedly off-limits according to liberals, but a 13-year-old boy is fair game. Disgusting.”
The first lady responded to professor Karlan by posting the following statement to her Twitter account:
A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.

The first lady’s rebuke of Karlan stands in stark contrast to the rest of her Twitter account, which is typically updated with mostly apolitical and humanitarian events. Professor Karlan’s remarks about Trump’s only child clearly struck a nerve.
Later in the day’s hearing, Karlan acknowledged her prior controversial remarks. Expressing regret, she said: “I want to apologize for mentioning the president’s son, it was wrong for me to do that.”
This week’s hearings follows the release of the House Intelligence Committee’s report into Trump’s supposed abuse of power. Democrats maintain Trump suspended around $400 million in military aid to Ukraine an effort to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate the business dealings of Joe and Hunter Biden.
