Former First Lady Laura Bush responded with gratitude to First Lady Melania Trump on Tuesday afternoon. She thanked Melania for a “sweet visit” to her former residence, the White House.
Melania Trump hosted 20 members of the Bush family on a tour through the White House on Tuesday, according to a White House source speaking with CNN.
The First Lady not only gave them a tour, but gave them holiday cookies and arranged for them to meet with residence staff members. Laura Bush posted an Instagram photo of the family with some residence staff members Tuesday.
“A sweet visit during this somber week,” the former first lady wrote in the caption in the Instagram post. “Thanks to Mrs. Trump for inviting our family to the White House to see the Christmas decorations and our old friends, the residence staff.”
Melania Trump led the family on a tour, but reportedly did not stay with the Bush family during their entire hourlong visit to the building. “[Trump] wanted to allow for the Bush family to have time at the White House together,” the source told CNN.
The Bush family is in Washington D.C. to honor the life and death of former President George H.W. Bush. He died at his Houston home on Friday. He was 94 years old.
Former President George W. Bush is scheduled to give a eulogy at his father’s funeral service on Wednesday.
President Trump and the first lady are scheduled to attend the funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Members of the Bush family promised President Trump that speeches and eulogies at the former president’s funeral would not have criticism about him, sources familiar with the funeral preparations told The Washington Post.
