Rep. Rashida Tlaib believes that President Trump is “the biggest bully” she’s ever had to deal with in her life.
The Michigan lawmaker made the confession during a taped sit-down with Gayle King.CBS Evening News posted this Tweet: “Pres. Trump is “the biggest bully I’ve ever had to deal with in my lifetime,” Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), alongside Reps. @AOC, IlhanMN and @AyannaPressley, says — the first joint interview of “The Squad” since @POTUS‘ incendiary tweets; watch @CBSThisMorning Wednesday, 7-9 a.m.”
Tlaib and her fellow “Squad” members, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley, got together with the “CBS This Morning” host on Tuesday for their first interview since the president aimed at them on Twitter.
The group had already targeted Trump at a Monday news conference, continued to fire back at him, condemning his “go back” to your country tweets as a “distraction.”
“I’m dealing with the biggest bully I’ve ever had to deal with in my lifetime and trying to push back on that, and trying to do the job that we all have been sent here to do, which is centered around the people at home,” Tlaib said. “This is a distraction.”
President Trump has been getting criticized by Democrats for the “go back” to your country tweets, in which he suggested that the four freshman congresswomen should leave the US and go fix their governments.
“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run ,” the president wrote Sunday.
“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done,” he continued. “These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements! ”
Trump stood behind his tweets on Tuesday, saying they “were NOT Racist.”
“I don’t have a Racist bone in my body!” the president claimed. “The so-called vote to be taken is a Democrat con game. Republicans should not show ‘weakness’ and fall into their trap.”
Ocasio-Cortez told King that she didn’t think Republicans were doing an adequate job at denouncing the comments.
“They could not bring themselves to have the basic human decency to vote against the statement that the president made on the floor,” she said. To which King asked, “What kind of message does that send?”
“The normalization of it. The fact that it’s against our core American values,” Tlaib said. “That they’re choosing him over country.”
Asked if they’d be willing to meet with Pelosi to make things straight, Ocasio-Cortez said “absolutely.”
“She has every right to sit down…in any moment, in any time, with any of us,” Tlaib added. “She is speaker of the House. She can ask for a meeting to sit down with us for clarification.”
The group ultimately wants Pelosi and Trump, himself, to “acknowledge the fact that we are women of color, so when you do single us out, be aware of that and what you’re doing, especially because some of us are getting death threats, because some of us are being singled out in many ways because of our backgrounds, because of our experiences and so forth.”
