According to multiple sources from both within and outside of NBC News, Ronan Farrow’s investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s history of alleged sexual misconduct was in the hands of NBC since August.
An NBC contributor and an investigative reporter had already obtained audio of an encounter Weinstein had with a woman, in which Weinstein admits to having groped her.
Multiple sources also reported that NBC had concerns on where the audio came from. Farrow was then cleared to take the audio, as well as his investigation to the New Yorker.
On her show Rachel Maddow asked Ronnan what happened:
Why did you end up reporting this story for The New Yorker and not NBC News?” MSNBC host Rachel Maddow asked on Tuesday night during “The Rachel Maddow Show.”You would have to ask NBC and NBC executives about the details of that story,” Farrow responded. “I’m not going to comment on any news organization’s story that they did or didn’t run. I will say that over many years, many news organizations have circled this story and faced a great deal of pressure in doing so. And there are now reports emerging publicly about the kinds of pressure that news organizations face in this. And that is real.”
Ronan also stated he was personally threatened by Weinstein with a lawsuit.
NBC then relinquished the story. According to a network source, the story “nowhere close to what ultimately ran in the NY Times or the New Yorker.”
Curtis Houck, the managing editor of NewsBusters, was one of the first to question NBC’s decision.
Early in Farrow’s investigation, he told multiple people he was working on the story for NBC. Farrow mentioned that he had already done on-camera interviews for his expose.
Two sources familiar with Farrow’s reporting also confirmed that he had conducted on-camera interviews. it is unclear, although if any of those interviews were with the women who have accused Weinstein of harassment or assault.
Journalist Lynn Hirschberg, who has covered Hollywood for years, said that Farrow had called her seeking help for the story.
Hirschberg said, “He said he was doing a special for NBC News. “He had somebody who was willing to be on camera. He definitely never said a word about the New Yorker….”
She concluded by saying, “It’s really a question about NBC’s courage.”
NBC will publish anything they can get to go after the President, a President that they have accused of sexual misconduct however never proven. But, if its a Hollywood superstar and one of their own, mum is the word.
What are your thoughts? Do you think NBC is up to something fishy?
