President Trump has fired back at Senator Chuck Schumer after his announcement that he is withdrawing his offer to fund the border wall.
Trump tweeted, “Cryin’ Chuck Schumer fully understands, especially after his humiliating defeat, that if there is no Wall, there is no DACA,” the president tweeted around 11 p.m. EST. “We must have safety and security, together with a strong Military, for our great people!”
Earlier Tuesday evening the White House spoke after the news broke that Schumer was pulling back on his offer.
White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley slammed Schumer, “He comes over here with a phony plan and a fake promise,” Gidley said.
After a three-day shutdown Democrats agreed to re-open the government because Senator Mitch McConnell promised that the Senate would bring DACA legislation to a vote in February.
During a White House Press conference on Tuesday Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the Flake-Graham-Durbin bill does not satisfy the White House.
“In a bipartisan meeting here at the White House two weeks ago we outlined a path forward on four issues: serious border security, an end to chain migration, the cancellation of the outdated and unsafe visa lottery and a permanent solution to DACA,” Sanders said. “Unfortunately, the Flake-Graham-Durbin agreement does not meet these benchmarks.”
Now, with Schumer pulling out funding for the border wall and pulling back from his original agreement he has pushed both sides even farther apart.
Usually, we don’t voice our opinion but Schumer just made a big mistake for the third time. First, he promised the dreamers DACA legislation by Christmas and didn’t do it. As a result, he ticked off a small portion of his base. Then this week he allowed Democrats to reopen the government and that really ticked off the whole base. Now, he’s trying to play hardball and save face. However, now the Republican narrative holds weight, if Schumer shutdowns the government all Republicans are going to say is we extended CHIP, we told you a bill could be brought to the floor in February, and you went back on your promise. Additionally, if this goes back to a shutdown now every Republican is going to say you are hurting the military for people that are not Americans.
Look, many people feel it is moral to shut the government down and get DACA and that is their right to feel that way. The problem is Schumer may have made some serious errors in trying to get that done.
Either Schumer is going to have to hold out for the long haul or cave and most likely he is going to cave.
Three strikes and your out Chuck, the pitch count is 0-2, and that sliding fastball is coming.
