“Time Magazine was right. Steve Bannon is president of the United States,” Joe Scarborough said Friday on his MSNBC show “Morning Joe.” Scarborough blamed White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon for the President’s decision to back out of the Paris climate accord.
The MSNBC host continued challenging this about the president: “Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about policy; Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about politics; Donald Trump doesn’t know anything about anything,” he said. “So Steve Bannon is now the president of the United States, and that was more clear yesterday than ever before.”
President Trump declared his decision on Thursday that the U.S. would exit from the 195-nation climate agreement. He fulfilled his inauguration promise to keep “America first,” and marked his most significant stride to unravel former President Obama’s environmental policies. This move has been blasted by critics nationally and internationally. Some are saying that it is an abdication of U.S. leadership and that America is withdrawing from its role as global standard-bearer.
Steve Bannon has referred to himself as an “economic nationalist.” He has been a vocal opponent of globalization and is widely considered to be the key player in influencing and implementing Trump’s policy agenda. The president’s daughter, Ivanka, cautioned her father about leaving the Paris Accord, but Bannon’s power prevailed.
It was that powerful influence over the president that caused Time Magazine to feature the chief strategist and former Breitbart News executive on the cover of its February issue. The news magazine labeled him “the great manipulator,” and ran a story titled, “Is Steve Bannon the 2nd Most Powerful Man in the World?”
What do you think? Is Joe Scarborough right? Is Bannon really functioning as president?
